I went to Tanzania in July 2014 as part of a home-building team from BAE as an apprentice at the time. I chose to go to experience another culture and try to help those in need and hoped to have left a positive feeling with those I met. As a team of 15, we worked on 2 smaller houses (one in memory of a team mate who had sadly passed away while we were planning the project) and on a larger orphanage.
We also worked in Fuka school where we organised activities for the children to tie in with our local community. This enabled us to show the children where we live how it is to be a child growing up in Africa, with the aim of showing them just how different our cultures and lives are. I feel that we were successful in this goal but we all gained so much more from those we met while in Tanzania.
I left feeling humbled at how we were able to make so many people smile, often just from our presence and how thankful they were for us being there. I will always remember the day where we played with the children on one work site using a football and empty water bottles filled with a few rocks and stones. They didn't have any technology like British children do, yet they were just as happy if not more. It's an experience that I am so proud to have participated in and will always hold close to my heart.
